Over 12 million acres, 47% of Kentucky, are covered in forests. The forest products industry is the fourth largest in the state, employing over 37,500 people and contributing approximately $820 million annually in payrolls. Forest products contribute almost 9 billion to the state's overall economy, employing one out of every nine manufacturing workers. 423,000 private landowners account for 78% of Kentucky's forests, which are sustainably managed. Kentucky has also improved their present and future growing stock by over 1% yearly.
