Karner Blue Butterfly - Habitat Conservation Plan - Plum Creek Timber Co., Wisconsin.

The Karner Blue butterfly (Lycaeides melissa samuelis) once ranged from Minnesota to New England but is now found only in six states. The Karner Blue was federally listed as endangered in 1992 and is totally dependent on a handful of plants that grow in sandy soil and disturbed sites such as powerline corridors and timber harvest units. Wisconsin Dept. of Natural Resources has developed a Habitat Conservation Plan with 30 agencies and private landowners to protect habitat and increase the Karner Blue populations in the state..
